Resource Allocation Systems: Some Complexity Results on the S4PR Class
نویسندگان
چکیده
In recent times, Petri nets have consolidated as a powerful formalism for the analysis and treatment of deadlocks in Resource Allocation Systems (RAS). In particular, the methodological framework yielded by the SPR class has raised considerable interest on the grounds of a well-balanced compromise between modelling flexibility and the provision of sound and effective correction techniques. These are strengthened by the advantages of the abstraction process, which allows the effective application of these techniques to diverse application domains. Most of the works on this class focus on providing tools and algorithms for dealing with the so-called resource allocation problem. This paper takes a different approach to provide an insight into the inherent computational complexity of the problem, from the perspective of optimality in either prevention, avoidance or detection of deadlocks. In particular, we will prove that most of the problems involved fall within the category of NP or co-NP-complete problems.

Some results on siphon computation for deadlock prevention in resource allocation systems modeled with petri nets - Emerging Technologies and Factory Automation, 2003. Proceedings. ETFA '03. IEEE Conference
Abslract-Siphons are related to liveness properties of Petri net models. This relation is strong in the case of resource allocation systems (US). Siphons can he used in these systems in order to both, characterize and preventlavoid deadlock situations. However, the Computation of these structural components can be very time consuming or, even, impassible. Moreover, if, in general, the complete ...

The ageing of the countries’ populations, and in particular the growing number of the very old, is increasing the need for long-term care (LTC). Not surprisingly, therefore, the financing of LTC systems has become a crucial topic across the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). In the last three decades, various financing policies have been carr...
متن کاملSub-Carrier Allocation in OFDM Systems: Complexity, Approximability and Algorithms
Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) has become the de facto standard for fourth generation wireless networks[5]. In such a network, the frequency band is divided into numerous orthogonal sub-carriers. In each time-slot, disjoint sets of sub-carriers can be assigned to users based on some target objective. The users in turn transmit data by spreading the information across the assi...
متن کاملA heuristic method for consumable resource allocation in multi-class dynamic PERT networks
This investigation presents a heuristic method for consumable resource allocation problem in multi-class dynamic Project Evaluation and Review Technique (PERT) networks, where new projects from different classes (types) arrive to system according to independent Poisson processes with different arrival rates. Each activity of any project is operated at a devoted service station located in a n...
متن کاملAn algorithm to compute the minimal siphons in S4PR nets
Minimal siphons in the class of S4 PR nets have become a conceptual and practical central tool for the study of the resource allocation related aspects in discrete event dynamic systems as, for example, the existence of deadlocks. Therefore the availability of efficient algorithms to compute the minimal siphons is essential. In this paper we try to take advantage of the particular properties of...
